Golden Edition

In celebration of Gallery TPW’s 50th anniversary in 2027, we’re excited to unveil a special Golden Edition by Suzy Lake, one of TPW’s founding members and a pioneering figure in Canadian photographic and lens-based art. This commemorative release honours TPW’s rich history of championing artists, pushing the boundaries of photographic practice, and fostering critical dialogue around images and their cultural impact.

Suzy Lake’s Golden Edition will be available for purchase from November 19th!

Suzy Lake was born in Detroit. Shaped by the socio-political issues of the 1960’s, she immigrated to Montreal in 1968. Her practice alternatively adopted performance, video, and photography as an exploration into the politics of the body, identity, and power relations.

She moved to Toronto in 1978 and met a group of photographers at Michael Mitchell’s studio that enthusiastically wanted to share their work and talk about photography. Although classically trained as a painter-printmaker, the group “welcomed her anyway”. There were lively exchanges of content/intent married with camera skill and print quality. From that energy, the Toronto Photographer’s Workshop was gradually formed.

The Art Gallery of Ontario mounted a retrospective of her work in 2014. Lake was the recipient of both a Governor General’s Award for Visual Arts and Media, and the Scotiabank Photography Award in 2016. The CAA awarded her with a Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Chicago in 2024.

Her work is in major Canadian museums, plus significant international institutions such as the Brandhorst Museum, Munich, Germany; Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris, France; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Museum Lodz, Wroclaw, Poland; and the Sammlung Verbund, Vienna, Austria.
